CELERY

The celery market is extremely tight, with light supplies. Demand is outpacing supply at this time, driving pricing up. You can find some product available out of California on the Marketplace now. See Celery availability.

Lemon

Lemon supplies are strong right now from both the Central CA and the southern desert areas. Quality is good, and markets are expected to remain steady. You can find both organic and conventional juicer product posted on the Marketplace now. See Lemon availability.

orange

Orange markets are steady with good supply. Navels have good quality and are peaking on 88, 113, and 138 ct. You can also find competitively priced early season Valencias out of Mexico posted on the Marketplace now. See Orange availability.

Apples

The apple market continues to experience limited supplies and increased pricing overall. According to a recent industry survey, U.S. fresh apple inventories in storage on December 1 of this year were down 7% compared with last year and off 14% compared with the five-year average. Processing grade apples in storage are at around 41 million cartons, which is about 8% less than last year on December 1. See Apple availability.

Celery

Celery markets continue to tighten, resulting in increased pricing. At this time, 30ct product has the highest availability, while value-added product like sticks are especially in light supply. Most product is coming out of the Oxnard/Santa Maria regions and quality is good. We expect tight supplies to last until the New Year. See Celery availability.

orange

Domestic Navels are in steady supply with good quality at this time. The smaller fruits have the strongest availability, but we expect 72ct and large to improve as the season progresses. Brix levels are at 11-12, and upcoming cooler weather will help color up the fruit naturally and increase sugar in the next few weeks. See Orange availability.

cauliflower

The cauliflower market is extremely tight at this time with supplies out of Salinas and Santa Maria, CA both limited. Heat, rain, and then cold temperatures have affected availability and prevented more supply from coming online. Demand is high, and you can expect the market to remain tight over the next week at least. See the Marketplace for availability.

broccoli

Broccoli suppliers are limited at this time. Recent rain in the Salinas, CA area has further limited an already tight supply as the end of the season approached. There have been some quality issues causing lower yields as well. You can expect this market to remain high over the next week. See Broccoli availability.

celery

The celery market is very active as demand increases due to the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday. Oxnard and Santa Maria, CA are the main growing areas with strong availability as Salinas is finishing up. Supply is peaking on larger size. Recent rain and cold temperatures have begun to slow down production, but quality remains good. See Celery availability.

Celery

Celery supplies are somewhat light, causing a stronger market. Most supply is out of Southern California, while Salinas is finishing up at this time. Larger sizing has the highest availability, and quality is above average. With the Thanksgiving holiday approaching, some suppliers expect supplies to tighten further over the coming weeks. Cauliflower

The cauliflower market is very tight with limited supplies from Salinas and Santa Maria. Demand remains high, resulting in high pricing at this time. Quality is fair with some discoloration and smaller sizing. Recent cooler weather has resulted in lower yields. Supply is expected to remain tight throughout the week.  See Cauliflower availability.

Orange

The Orange market is steady this week overall. Domestic Navels out of California are the main variety. 88ct and larger fruits are tight as the season begins, while 113-138 ct smaller fruits are peaking. Demand, supply, and quality are all good at this time. See Orange availability.

Apple

Overall, the apple market is tight and peaking on larger size and higher grade fruit. You can expect small and off-grade fruits to be on the tighter side for the remainder of the season. Fuji supply should improve as new crop harvests continue, while Gala apples supply is solid. You can find options on the Marketplace out of California, Michigan, and Washington now. Celery

Celery supply and quality are good, with light production out of Salinas and stronger supply out of Oxnard and Santa Maria, CA. However, there are some supply challenges in the growing regions outside California, putting more pressure on California availability and driving prices up.  See Celery availability.

summer squash

The squash market is steady overall this week. On the West Coast, availability out of Nogales is increasing, while Baja and California squash are both finishing up. East coast supply is light out of Georgia and South Carolina due to cold temperatures. This has led to demand outweighing supply, increased pricing, and buyers looking to the West Coast to fill their needs. See Summer Squash availability.

Celery

Overall, celery production continues to be strong with high availability out of Salinas and Southern California. Demand is moderate, leading to excess inventory and lower prices. Organic celery is especially strong this week, with prices at times below the conventional market. We recommend taking advantage of deals now while prices are low. See Celery availability.

cauliflower

The cauliflower market is flat this week, with good supply out of Salinas and Santa Maria and fairly good demand reported. There is little surplus product available. However, there are good opportunities for wrapped cauliflower. If you can handle wrapped product, we recommend taking advantage of deals on the excess product now. See Cauliflower availability.

orange

The orange market is flat this week with supply remaining tight overall. Supplies of domestic Valencia oranges are loosening up due to more imported citrus becoming available. Quality is good with some regreening present in domestic product. Sizing is peaking on 88, 72, and 56 count product. See Orange availability.

Bell Pepper

The Red Bell market continues to be tight and is expected to remain that way for the coming week. Choice grade pricing is quite high while processing grade product is almost completely sold out due to low supply. Green Bells are in transition from Bakersfield, CA to the Central Valley, and growers are experiencing some early season issues resulting in low availability. The East Coast crop out of Georgia finished early due to high temperatures and humidity. This has resulted in Midwest buyers shifting their demand to the West Coast, tightening the market even further. See Marketplace for availability.

Orange

Growers are reporting strong demand and solid supply on both Conventional & Organic Valencias out of California. A majority of juice-grade supply is prebooked, resulting in little spot buy availability and forcing buyers to purchase choice or fancy grade at higher spot prices to meet their needs. The total CA Valencia crop this year is up over last year, but still only around 80% of what it was projected to be. Sizes are peaking on smaller fruit. Growers are expecting pricing to remain strong and/or increase through August. We recommend pre-booking as much of your demand as possible, as well as trying to take mixed sizes and additional citrus items as you are able. California Valencias will run through late September/early October, and Mexico will start-up in November. See Marketplace for availability.

Celery

Celery Markets are steady overall with solid demand and pricing. Some suppliers have been impacted by pith and seeder quality issues. Recent high temperatures have also affected the yield out of some fields, and could potentially result in less supply and higher prices. See Celery availability.

Celery

Celery availability is strong out of Oxnard and Santa Maria, with supplies exceeding demand at this time. Production in Yuma has finished, but suppliers continue to transfer products to the Salinas area for a transfer fee if needed. The celery quality is above average, even with the high temperatures. Expect good supplies to continue throughout this week. See Celery availability.

Orange

There is a steady supply of Mexican Valencias loading in Nogales, AZ. The Organic season was initially estimated to end in April but is likely going through mid-May. The Conventional season will last until late June. The California Valencia season will ramp up at the end of this month and will last through the early Fall. California navel supplies are limited at this time as many growers wrap up their season. If you need Navels, we recommend getting orders placed ASAP before pricing continues to rise and supplies become even more limited. See Orange availability.

Turmeric

Turmeric availability out of Mexico is steady at this time. However, Hawaiian Turmeric supplies are limited with higher pricing as we are in the planting season, and there is less labor available for harvesting product. You can find organic Turmeric from Fiji and Hawaii posted on The Marketplace now; be aware that there is a 7-day lead time required for the Fijian product. See Turmeric availability.

Produce Trends - March 14, 2022

celery

Celery availability is tight at this time, especially for value-added product like sticks. Commodity celery is steady out of Arizona with lighter supplies from CA. Supply should improve in the second half of March. See Celery availability.

cauliflower

The Cauliflower market has slowed down with volatile availability expected to last for the next week or so before improving. Quality is fair to good. You can find organic product on The Marketplace loading out of Salinas, CA. See Cauliflower availability.

LEMON

California growers are reporting a strong supply of Lemons in all 3 growing regions in CA (Coastal, Central Valley, Desert). Volumes should remain steady through April with supply starting to trickle off by the end of May. California will be back with a strong supply in the fall. Out of Mexico, supply is expected to ramp up starting in mid-May. Limited juice volume is predicted at the beginning of the season, with the majority of growers ramping up in August/September. We recommend purchasing lemons in the next 6-8 weeks while California is still producing high volumes to avoid higher pricing when California trickles off and Mexico is just getting started. Produce Trends - February 28, 2022

CARROTS

The major carrot growing regions are in transition from the San Joaquin Valley to the Imperial Valley, causing limited supplies of jumbos. Supplies are expected to get better when size increases in March. See Carrot availability.

CELERY

Value-added celery, like sticks, is limited as demand is greater than supply due to capacity constraints. Whole celery has steady availability at this time. Supplies should increase around March. See Celery availability.

cabbage

Cabbage supply has been affected by some insect presence in the desert region of California recently. Specifically, organic cabbage is showing some damage from Aphids infestation. Pricing remains on the higher end at this time.

Celery

The celery market is tight overall due to colder weather. Prices are up, but we still have some great deals on The Marketplace for both organic and conventional product. We recommend taking advantage of supply now before the market gets tighter. See Celery availability.

Lemon

The lemon market is steady this week. According to suppliers, The District 3 region of California (Coachella/Mesa) is in full swing, with good quality and availability. District 1 has started harvesting when possible, but supply is slow to pick up due to fog. We have a variety of surplus #1 and juice grade product available now on The Marketplace. See Lemon availability.

Carrot

The jumbo carrot market is volatile this week. Pricing out of California is up with moderate supply and high demand, while Mexican supply is steady. Demand continues to outpace supply of school sizes and bulk pack carrots. We have solid availability of 2” chunks - both peeled and unpeeled and organic and conventional on The Marketplace now. See Carrot availability.

Lemons

The lemon market is steady, with strong availability out of Arizona and California. Imports are winding down and quality is good. You can find organic juicer product on the Marketplace now. See Lemon availability.

Tomato

Supply is getting tighter on roman and round tomatoes, due to lighter supplies out of Mexico and Florida than usual. We currently have product loading out of California and Mexico on the Marketplace. Grape and cherry tomato markets are stable. See Tomato availability.

Celery

The celery market is strong, with good availability and pricing on the Marketplace now. Value added celery, like sticks and diced, are tighter than whole stalks. We do have some sticks available now, along with organic and conventional product of a variety of grades. See Celery availability.
